How to Crochet a Sweater?

Crocheting a Sweater is easy to do with just a few basic crochet skills! The body is made with two rectangles and some simple neck shaping while the arms are worked flat with some easy increases. Seam it all together and you will have a perfectly tailored sweater that was easier than you thought!

Simple Crocheted Sweater Pattern

Materials

Gauge

  • 14 sts x 13 rows = 4” x 4” in pattern repeat.
  • Counting the Alpine Stitch is easiest by using the wrong side to count your rows and stitches.
  • Multiple of 2+1

Stitch Descriptions and Abbreviations

  • Chain Stitch – ch
  • Slip Stitch – sl st 
  • Stitch(es) – st(s)
  • Stitch Marker – SM
  • Single Crochet – sc
  • Double Crochet – dc
  • Foundation Double Crochet – Fdc – Chain 4, yarn over, insert hook into 4th chain from the hook, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through 1 loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through all loops (1 foundation double crochet with chain at bottom created). *Yarn over, insert hook to bottom of the stitch you just made, it will look like the top or “V” of a stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 1 loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over pull though all loops, repeat from * to desired st count.
  • Front Post Treble Crochet – FPtr – Work a tr as you normally would however, insert hook from front to back to front around the dc of the previous row to complete your stitch. 
  • Alpine Stitch Explanation– This pattern is worked in alternating rows of sc and FPtr/dc.  The Alpine stitch is worked with an alternating dc and FPtr row, with the FPtr worked in the dc stitch two rows down and skipping its corresponding sc. The dc is worked in its corresponding sc stitch. You will also skip one dc between each FPtr on the previous dc row.

  • Skill Level: Intermediate
  • * Designates a repeat.
  • Garment is designed to fit with approximately 10” positive ease. 
  • “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch.
  • “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches.
  • “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next stitch to create an increase.
  • Front and Back Panels have different neck shaping instructions.

Assembly for your Crocheted Sweater

  1. With right sides facing, seam your row ends together on each sleeve from wrist to armpit.
  2. Lay your Back Panel on your Front Panel with right sides facing.
  3. Working from the Shoulder in to the Neck Opening, seam your Crocheted Sweater together using a mattress stitch or seaming method of choice on both sides.
  4. Place a SM 7.5 (7.5, 8, 8.5)” down from the shoulder to mark the arm pit. 
  5. Starting from the waist, seam up to the SM you just placed at the arm pit using a mattress stitch or seaming method of choice, repeat for other side. 
  6. Take your sleeves and with the join aligned with the arm pit begin seaming your sleeves to the body (front and back panel), repeat for other sleeve. 
  7. Finish off and weave in all ends. 
  8. Turn your sweater right side out and continue to Neck Trim.

Neck Trim

  1. Attach your yarn at one of the shoulder seams.
  2. With the right side facing you, single crochet evenly around the neck opening of you crocheted sweater, sl st to join.
  3. Chain 1 and sc in each stitch using a sc2tog in each corner created by the neck shaping, there should be 2 “corners” on the front panel and 2 “corners” on the back panel made where the short rows began.
  4. Repeat Step 3 one more time or until you have your desired neck opening. 
  5. Finish off, weave in your ends, continue Sleeve Trim.

Sleeve Trim

  1. Attach your yarn at one of the seams at the wrist of your sleeve.
  2. With the right side facing you, single crochet in each stitch of the wrist, sl st to join.
  3. Do not turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch around, sl st to join.
  4. Repeat Step 3 once more or as much as desired to create your cuff.
  5. Finish off and weave in your ends. Repeat on other sleeve.
