How to Make a Ruana Pattern?
A Crochet Ruana is easy to make. Basically, it is a large rectangular shape or square. A Ruana has a slit in the middle of one side to the center to form the front opening.
Generally they are flat and worked in back and forth rows. Ruanas are sometimes made as one piece and other times with a first and second panel seamed together like this one I designed.
What is a Ruana?
A ruana is a large layering piece made from a simple rectangle or from two rectangular panels seamed together. You could also describe a Ruana as a poncho like garment that drapes easily over your shields but the sides are open as well.
I did some research to find out some history of a Ruana. It seems that the origin is mostly unknown but is worn in many different cultures throughout history. Ruanas are commonly made out of wool and are seen a lot in the the mountains of Colombia.
Ruanas have also been documented in Ireland and Scotland. Wherever their origin, one thing is for sure, this poncho-like garment is definitely a wardrobe staple with great functionality!
Pattern Description
The Reverie Ruana has a very interesting construction not typical of a classic ruana because it is NOT a rectangle like other popular crochet ruanas such as the Darla Ruana or Kanga Ruana.
This crochet Ruana is made using two rectangles that decrease on the short side to form what is also known as a trapezoid.
This unique shape allows the sides to be shorter while adding length to the center of the back panel and front panels. When worn it has a crochet poncho type look.
Using this shaping, stitch pattern and worsted weight yarn you will create a wonderfully draping crocheted Ruana.
I used a combination of half double crochet stitches, bobble stitches, chain spaces and decreases to create subtle vertical stripes for a flattering fit.
This ruana has two size fits, standard and plus, but is easily customizable and will be a great layering piece for colder months.
To add or reduce lengths you would have to have a longer or shorter starting chain. You would then have to add or subtract the difference from the center stitch count given in the row instructions.
To add or reduce width you would need to add or reduce your total number of rows.
The length of this pattern in made up by the number of stitches and the width is made up by the number of rows.
I designed this free crochet Ruana pattern to be for an easy to intermediate skill level. I used a simple pattern repeat that is easy to see when you are doing it correctl.

Assembly
- Lay Panels flat with right sides up and longest edges together, you may place a Stitch Marker 85 (95) sts up.
- Using a flat zipper seam, start at one end (C) and work up toward the middle (D) of the panels, 85/95 stitches total or to your desired length. Finish off.
Trimming
- With right sided facing, attach your yarn with a Sl St at the furthest most point where you created the seam and ch 1, hdc in the same space, and work up the angled side evenly in hdc.
- When you reach the corner place 3 hdc in the corner stitch then work 1 hdc in each hdc st up the side until you reach the ch-1 sps. Place Stitch Markers in the center sc if needed to mark your corners
- Working only in the ch-1 sps, place 2 hdc in each ch-1 sp, then when you reach the end with all hdc sts place 1 hdc in each st.
- Place 3 hdc in the corner, and work up the angled side evenly in hdc, place 4 hdc in the next corner.
- Work evenly down the next side in hdc, when you reach the seam, place 1 hdc in the join and then continue down the next panel in hdc evenly.
- Place 4 hdc in the next corner and hdc evenly down the angled side and place 3 hdc in the next corner and hdc evenly until you reach the ch-1 sps.
- Working only in the ch-1 sps, place 2 hdc in each ch-1 sp, when you reach the end with all hdc place 1 hdc in each st.
- Place 3 hdc in the corner, and work up the angled side evenly in hdc, then place 2 hdc in the same space you started in and Sl St together.
- Finish off and weave in your ends!
If you like Reverie…
…you will love this Free Crochet Wrap Pattern!
Have you ever thought of seaming up the sides to make sleeves and more of a cardigan. It looks like it would work from looking at the pictures. Thanks for the pattern.
There are some plans in the works for different variations ?
This is really one of my favorite crochet patterns of the year! The pattern design is beautiful and the piece itself is so unique. I just love this design.
Thank you SO much!
Could you explain what is meant by “1 HDC ‘around’ next chain space”?
I like to crochet around the chain, not through it, I think it looks cleaner. But you can work the stitch however you please ?
I see, I guess the word “space” threw me. Thanks.
What a beautiful pattern. I’ve just started making it and the instructions are clear and well written. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much!
I’m having difficulty with Row 4, I have an extra bobble from Row 2 that doesn’t match up with anything. Each row has 20 bobbles. I’m very confused. Rows 1 2 and 3 are counted correctly, but I have six extra stitches at the end of Row 3 when I am supposed to hdc3 HDC two together in last two at the end of Row 4.
As per the pattern you are doing a hdc2tog at the beginning and end of each row. You should be going down by 2 stitches for you total on every row.
Loving the pattern so far, but row 14 is confusing me, particularly between the asterisks. Is that hdc around the chain space, like in row 13 and 15?
I place my stitches around the chain space not in the stitch, I believe it looks cleaner that way. You can work the chain space however you feel comfortable! ?
