Pattern Description + Helpful Tips
This free crochet pattern is an intermediate level pattern that is suitable for advanced beginners who are comfortable working in the round.
It will be extremely important that you achieve the right gauge to ensure a proper fit to crochet this simple hat.
The gauge for this pattern is checked by working the first 11 rounds in the pattern instructions to create a 4 inch diameter flat circle in place of a typical gauge swatch. If your circle is larger than 4 inches go down a hook size, if it is smaller than 4 inches go up a hook size.
You may choose to start with a magic ring or magic circle if you prefer that over starting with a chain 2.
This cute hat is classy with a wide brim and an adorable modern bow band! The color combinations are endless for the main color and band color!
I love this crochet summer hat because it can be customized in so many ways to be a functional sun hat! You can follow the pattern as it is written OR add more rounds to create a wider brim OR reduce the number of rounds for more of a fedora style crochet hat with a narrow brim.
The body of this hat is nice and deep so if you do reduce the number of rounds in the brim it will create more of a crochet bucket hat style.
To make the solid brim you can use beading wire like I did, galvanized wire rope or millinery wire. What ever you choose, just make sure to have the proper wire cutter needed.
If you do not want a solid brim you can forgo the wire in the brim edge and have a large floppy hat perfect for beach days!

- You may use continuous rounds in the “Hat Body” Section but be sure to keep track of your rounds.
- Adding the beading wire to the last round in the brim is optional however, not using it will change the look of the hat making it more floppy. You could forgo the wire and add later, but it is easier to crochet over the wire than it is to thread it in.
- “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch.
- “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches.
- “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next stitch to create an increase.

The next set of rounds will create the Body of the Hat. You may add or subtract rounds if you want the Body of the Hat deeper or more shallow. For this section the pattern continues with the “*Sl st to join and ch 1 on each round” as the first set of rounds did for the “Top of Hat” section. You may work in continuous rounds if preferred to hide the joining seam, be sure to use a Stitch Marker to keep track of your rounds, there are no increase rounds in this section.
Next 18 (20) Rounds – Sc around in each st. [96 (102) sts]
The Body of the Hat will measure approximately 3.5 (4) inches tall.
Brim of Hat – Color A
This next set of rounds will move back to creating the rest of the flat circle. You may customize this section by adding or subtracting rounds to make the Brim of the Hat as large as you would like. If you are planning to use the beading wire to stabilize keep going, the wire will keep it sturdy! Note size Small has an Extra Catchup Round.
Size Small Only: Extra Round – *Sc 15, 2 sc in next st, repeat from* to end. [102 sts] All sizes move to “Round 1”.

Optional: Take your beading wire and lay it around the brim of your hat to get an accurate length needed. Add 2 inches so that you have some overlap on the wire, cut your wire. I doubled mine and worked around 2 pieces of wire, 1 will work if you do not have enough wire. Hold your wire along the top of Round 31 so that you can crochet over it with Round 32. Leave about inch out so that it does not slip out of your first stitch. When you get close to finishing Round 32 make sure all the ends of wire are laying properly so that you can crochet over them. Then move your stitches around the wire to adjust the brim.
Round 32 – Sc evenly around working over the beading wire if you have chosen to do so, finish off. [186 sts]
Optional: Add a surface slip stitch in the last 3 rounds created.
Bow Tie Band – Color B
Row 1 – Ch 141.
Row 2 – Sl st in the 2nd ch from hook, sl st to end using the back bump. [140 sts]
Row 3 – Ch 1, turn, sk 1st st, blo sl st to end. [139 sts]
Rows 4 to 8 – Repeat Row 3 with each row decreasing by 1 st, finish off.
Choose the desired placement on your hat for the Bow Tie Band and seam the bottom edge to the final round of the “Body of Hat”. Make sure to align each stitch so that there is no pinching on your wide-brim crochet sun hat. Where the band crosses take your time to get it to lay nicely and seam down. Seam along the top edge of the band as well. Weave in all ends!
