v neck crochet sweater vest

Pattern Description

This pattern is classified as an Advanced Skill Level that uses a combination of basic stitches and more complex stitches written in US Terms.

For this easy crochet sweater vest I designed it to fit a bust of 34 (42, 50, 58)” with a Positive Ease of 6 (4, 2, 2)” giving a slightly oversized fit.

The free crochet pattern for a sweater vest is multi seasonal and can even be worn in warmer weather. Choosing a warm weather yarn like cotton in place of wool can make this a springtime staple!

The v-neck design adds an elevated elegance giving this sweater vest a comfortable fit and perfect to wear over a collard shirt or turtleneck.

Customization Options

This pattern is designed to use Lion Brand Wool-Ease Recycled which is a CYC 4 Worsted Weight Yarn. I personally feel that this fiber is a light weight number four yarn and that you can swap of a comparable CYC 3 DK Weight Yarn.

If you would like to create a long vest pattern you may do an extra set of cables in the Bottom Section of the Body Panels to make the torso longer.

The neck edge is designed simply with a round of single crochet. You may add more rounds if you would like a smaller neck opening.

The armholes also has a simple finish but you could easily continue the rounds and add some armhole ribbing of your choice.

Tips to Make this Free Crochet Sweater Vest Pattern

Use a stitch marker at the beginning and end of each row and even at the beginning and end of the larger cable to help keep track of your stitch count.

To avoid pattern fatigue, work both of your body panels at the same time. Meaning start with one skein and work through to the end and then start with another skein to begin the second panel. Keep working back and forth between both so that you will be completing your panels around the same time.

Pattern Notes

  • Sizes – XS/S (M/L, XL/2XL, 3XL/4XL)
  • Designates a repeat.
  • “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch.
  • “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches.
  • “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next stitch to create an increase.
  • Be mindful of when it is noted to work behind or in front of a FPdc when crossing sts.
  • When a FPdc is created you must make sure to skip the stitches behind in the round you are working. For Example: When you “FPdc 2” you must skip 2 sc sts in the previous row leaving them unworked, so each row has the same number of sts, this is NOT noted in the row instructions.
  • You will have the same number of stitches in all cable rows as single crochet rows.
  • When skipping single crochet stitches in Row 4 to create the Cable Foundation you will be counting forward from the corresponding single crochet stitch created in Row 2 (noted as ‘prev row’).
  • Reference the stitch diagrams for the repeats and proper stitch placement, note that FPdc sts are working in FPdc sts but for clarity the diagram does NOT show the overlap.
  • Stitch Diagrams for Row Repeats have the order of the placement of the FPdc sts numbered if you prefer a visual. Be mindful of if you are working in FRONT or BEHIND of a FPdc.
  • FPdc sts are always worked in FPdc sts with the exception of Row 4 where the FPdc sts are worked in Single Crochet Stitches of Row 2 to set up the Foundation FPdc sts.
