Free Easy Filet Crochet Top Pattern for Summer – Simple Tee

Filet Crochet Patterns have been trending recently, have you noticed? I have and I have been wanting to jump into using this crochet technique to design for a while! I chose to use a simple stitch pattern to create this easy filet crochet top project so that it can be mindless and not too overwhelming for beginner crocheters looking to try filet mesh for the first time!

This simple crochet shirt is made from two identical rectangles that are seamed together to create a flattering chevron pattern! Read more about this easy crochet top, the filet crochet technique and use the written free pattern below!

What is Filet Crochet?

Filet crochet is a technique that uses a grid created with double crochet stitches and chain spaces to make pictures, patterns and text! You will have of open and filled squares, think of a digital pixel grid or cross-stitch. Typically you will see these worked in a single color using fine cotton thread.

However, this technique has been growing and you will now see it used in many different yarn types using thicker yarn to make statement crochet pieces!

Filet crochet can be used so many ways from table runners, window curtains, placemats, doilies, blankets, summer tops, cardigans and so much more!

Both sides are right sides unless you are creating wording or want your picture to be viewed a certain way.

When using this type of crochet you might see a filet crochet chart or grid chart, especially for more complicated designs and motifs. This is a similar concept for pattern writing to the grid charts used for corner to corner crochet.

This is done so that instead of having so many written lines you just need to look row by row and create a double crochet or chain based off of if you have open squares or filled in black squares.

For this pattern I have chosen to do a written pattern since this is a very simple repeat.

What makes this Crochet Top Easy?

This free crochet pattern is easy because it only uses chains and double crochet stitches.

You will make two long identical rectangular panels, one will then be flipped to form the chevon pattern on the front and back of you summer correct tee shirt.

Then with four simple seams, two side seams, a front seam and a back seam you can create a cute summer crochet top.

Adjusting this filet design is easy, read more in the “Tips for Sizing” below. You can easily turn this top into a crop top or beach coverup or dress!

Materials

  • Size 4.00mm crochet hook
  • 3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5) Skeins of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK in Desert Lily [#769-143X]
  • Dk Weight No. 3 – 565 (580, 610, 825, 845, 880, 1095, 1135, 1155) yards
  • Yarn Needle

Gauge

  • Make a starting chain of 30 and complete 11 rows.
  • Unblocked/blocked: 18 sts by 9 rows in pattern repeat is 4 by 4.25 inches.
  • Wether you are working with the recommended yarn, a yarn of similar fiber content or something different, gauge for this pattern along side your preferred blocking method is EXTREMELY important to make sure your top is the right size, fits properly and you have enough yardage.
  • Lion Brand’s 24/7 DK can block out significantly depending in stitch, however this one did not.
  • You will need to create a swatch larger than the given gauge to measure your gauge:
Make a starting chain of 30 and complete 11 rows.
  • My UNBLOCKED and BLOCKED gauge is 18 sts by 9 rows in pattern repeat is 4 by 4.25 inches using a 4.00 mm hook. Once dry my top sprang back to its original measurements, so make sure you let your swatch dry fully before measuring.
  • For this pattern I only did a light steam blocking to relax the fabric, open the stitches and straighten my edges.
  • If using a different fiber, like wool or a cotton blend for example, you may need to change your hook and/or blocking method to reach the same Blocked/Finished Gauge.

Sizing

  • XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL)

Tips for Sizing

  • How to Adjust the Length of the Body: The length of your body is dictated by the number of stitches in this pattern. To add length you will add/subtract stitches to the starting chain for the Body Panels by 9’s. Remember to add/subtract the same number of stitches to both panels.
  • How to Adjust the Width of the Body: The width of your body is dictated by the number of rows in this pattern. To add/subtract width you will add/subtract rows. Remember to add the same number of rows to both panels so that you can properly create the chevron pattern.
  • How to Adjust the Neck Opening: To adjust the Neck Opening you just need to seam more or less stitches together.
  • How to Adjust the Sleeve Length: This top is made with two simple rectangles and no shaping, so the sleeve length is dictated by the panel width. On larger sizes you will have a longer sleeve. If you would like them shorter you will need to do less rows on your panels and create a set of short rows on the side to meet your needed bust measurement.
  • A Note on Yardage: This stitch is a yarn eater, so please be mindful of your gauge.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Any changes to sizing will affect your yardage, buy an extra skein if you plan to adjust sizing to avoid running out of yarn or lot color variations.

Stitch Descriptions and Abbreviations

How to Assemble your Filet Crochet Tee

  1. Lightly pre-block your panels before seaming to avoid pinching in your seams.
  2. Lay your panels flat and spin them to create a chevron pattern that will be at the center of your body. There is no right side for this pattern, so flip and spin panels accordingly.
  3. Using the seam of your choice (I used an invisible seam) seam from the waist up (bottom hem) to form the neck opening. Repeat from the other end to complete the neck opening.
Note: I seamed 72 on the front and 81 on the back, seam yours to your desired fit. Be sure to leave a long tail on each side so you can adjust the neck opening.
  4. Fold the panels in half to seam the sides to create an arm opening.
Note: I seamed 60 stitches. Leave a long tail so you can adjust the arm opening.
  5. Repeat Step 4 on the other side to create the second arm opening.
  6. Weave in all ends and enjoy!
