Cabled Crochet Sweater Pattern

Pattern Description

This Free Crochet Pattern for a Cabled Crochet Sweater is made by using a simple rectangular panel for the front panel and back panel. There are a few extension rows to create the shoulder seam areas and to drop the neck. This will create the yoke of the sweater which is a crew neck style.

I designed this to have an extra baggy sweater look with 6 to 8 inches of positive ease depending on the size you are making.

The front and back panels consist of 3 simple cables, each of which I have created a stitch diagram and video tutorial for. Take your time, watch your stitch count and be sure to work completely around the post of stitches so that your cables are neat.

Beautiful Crochet cables

The sleeve panels are made using the griddle stitch, which is made by alternating a slip stitch and double crochet stitches. You can leave a long tail on each sleeve to seam the together.

Add or subtract rows as desired to customize the sleeve length. If you would like to increase the sleeve width you will need to add more increase rows, or make a sleeve size different from the one noted for your size.

When seaming together the body panels, the shoulders are seamed together in the final short rows and the sides are seamed on the outer edge in the row ends. Be careful to align your stitches carefully. This is explained in more detail in the assembly instructions below.

The bottom ribbing of the sweater is simple to cinch the waist. After assembly there are some decrease rounds at the bottom of the sweater in the waist instructions to enhance the baggy sweater look before you begin you post stitches.

Is Cable Crochet Hard?

Cable stitches are not hard but you must really pay attention to your stitch placement. There is a right side and and wrong side that will be very obvious so that makes it easier.

Be very careful of your tension and adjust upper hook size as necessary. The use of stitch markers to mark the first and last stitch of a repeat will help to avoid skipped stitches.

What are The Different Stitches in Cable Crochet?

Cable crochet stitches are mostly made up of alternating a single crochet only row with a single crochet row combined double crochets worked in the front posts of the row below. These are called a Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc).

Sometimes a special crochet cable stitch pattern may call for some additional stitches like a back post double crochet. Be sure to read through the entire patter so you understand each cable cluster.

How do you Crochet a Twisted Cable?

You can crochet a Twisted Cable by skipping forward a stitch and then working your next back over into the skipped stitch. A skipped dc that is worked later will pull the post stitches around each other to create the twisted cable effect.

Pattern Notes

  • Sizes – XS/S (M/L, XL/2XL, 3XL/4XL)
  • Designates a repeat.
  • “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch.
  • “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches.
  • “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next stitch to create an increase.
  • Be mindful of when it is noted to work behind or in front of a FPdc when crossing sts.
  • When a FPdc is created you must make sure to skip the stitches behind in the round you are working. For Example: When you “FPdc 2” you must skip 2 sc sts in the previous row leaving them unworked, so each row has the same number of sts, this is NOT noted in the row instructions.
  • You will have the same number of stitches in all cable rows as single crochet rows.
  • When skipping single crochet stitches in Row 4 to create the Cable Foundation you will be counting forward from the corresponding single crochet stitch created in Row 2 (noted as ‘prev row’).
  • Reference the stitch diagrams for the repeats and proper stitch placement, note that FPdc sts are working in FPdc sts but for clarity the diagram does NOT show the overlap.
  • Stitch Diagrams for Row Repeats have the order of the placement of the FPdc sts numbered if you prefer a visual. Be mindful of if you are working in FRONT or BEHIND of a FPdc.
  • FPdc sts are always worked in FPdc sts with the exception of Row 4 where the FPdc sts are worked in Single Crochet Stitches of Row 2 to set up the Foundation FPdc sts.

  1. Seam together both sleeves using the Row Ends and working from Row 1 to the Final Row.
  2. Lay your Front Panel on your Back Panel with Right Sides facing and using a mattress stitch or your preferred seaming/joining method seam together the shoulders.
  3. Align the bottom of your Front and Back Panels (remember they had different neck openings heights) to find the correct placement for your sleeves.
  4. Using your sleeves as a guide, measure or mark the location of your armpits.
  5. Seam from the waist up using the row ends of the Front and Back Panels.
  6. When you reach the armpit begin seaming around to attach the sleeves to the body panels. Be sure to put the sleeve seam down.
  7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for the second sleeve.
