Something I have always wanted to do with crochet, is make things that would become family heirlooms. This Crochet Christmas Hexagon Blanket is exactly that! My hope is that this crochet throw is something special that will come out every year, become part of our holiday memories and one day be a common item seen in all of our holiday photos! I know crochet granny square have been all the rage lately, but I think I prefer a crochet hexagon! Design Story and Inspiration

I have always wanted to have my own heirlooms to hand down to kids and grandkids one day. I know it’s something that may have sounded weird a few years ago before I ever had children, but I always remember being fascinated by things that my grandparents had that were from another time. I loved looking at things that were from when my parents were children, even from my grandparents own childhoods! Things today just don’t seem to be made with the same quality and care as often as they used to be. This is a huge reason why I appreciate fiber arts like crochet and knitting, they take time and skill, but most importantly care and passion. When someone sits down to create something like this Crochet Christmas Hexagon Blanket, you know they are putting a lot of their precious time and love into it. Something handmade like this should be loved and cherished for years and generations to come! This is a simple and easy crochet project, if you can crochet a hexagon, you can make a whole blanket!

Gauge

The double crochet gauge for this pattern is 12 stitches by 8 rows, while the final Hexi is 7.5″ from side to side and 8″ from point to point.

Stitch Descriptions and Abbreviations

Chain Stitch – ch

Front Post Double Crochet – FPdc – Work a dc as you normally would however, insert hook from front to back to front around the dc of the previous row to complete your stitch.

Pattern Notes

Ch 1 does count as a stitch.

Assembly

To assemble this Crochet Hexagon Blanket I used the mattress stitch. If you made Hexis to match my sample use the photo below for placement.

With your right sides down, lay your hexagons to be seamed next to each other, lining up the corresponding stitches and sides.
Using your threaded darning needle, pick up the back loop of the stitch closest to you on the Right hexagon by threading the needle through, working from left to right.
Thread your needle through the same stitch on the Left hexagon, working from right to left.
Still working on the Left hexagon, thread your needle through the back loop of the next stitch up, working from left to right.
Moving now to the Right hexagon, work back through the last worked stitch, from left to right.
Still working on the Right hexagon, thread your needle through the back loop of the next stitch up, working from right to left.
Moving now to the Left hexagon, work back through the last worked stitch, from right to left.
Repeat Steps 4 to 7 until seamed edge is complete.
