Design Story and Inspiration

When inspiration strikes you just have to run with it! That is exactly what happened with this cute flower boho crochet plant coaster! My mom LOVES plants and she has started to add some potted ones to her home…like this one! As soon as I saw it I swear it spoke to me and said “I need a plant mat!”. Really, so off I ran to grab some cotton yarns from my stash! This beautiful orange from Circulo Yarns has been sitting in my stash waiting to be used, you don’t even know how excited I was when my mom picked it! I love how this round coaster finished up, it reminds me of a big sunflower!

About the Yarn

I love cotton…I say that a lot don’t I? If I had to choose, I would only use cottons, seriously! It’s soft, durable and can be used for so many things! Cotton is a great fiber for home decor projects but especially for a coaster! Coasters need to be absorbent whether you make them for plants or drinks! One of my biggest pet peeves is water marks on furniture….these DIY Coasters will save that problem! For this Free Crochet Coaster Pattern I used a yarn called Duna from Circulo. Drink Coaster or Plant Coaster?

BOTH! The great thing about these DIY Crochet Coasters is you can use them so many ways! Right now these are being used as plant coasters and drink coasters but I am sure you can think of so many other uses for them! I bet the small ones would make great face scrubbies and the bigger ones would probably work wonderfully as a placemat! You could even use them for your soap or soap dispenser! Imagine them out for a holiday dinner as hot pad for serving! There are just so many uses for these cute boho coasters, endless home decor and styling ideas!

How to crochet a coaster for beginners!

Crocheting a plant coaster or drink coaster is easy, just remember that you will be placing something on it so you want to choose your stitches wisely. This round crochet coaster is easy because it is mostly a flat single crochet circle with the details on the outside.

Materials

Size 3.25 mm crochet hook
Scissors
#3 DK Wt. Yarn,
Sample – Circulo Duna 100% Cotton
40, 80, 120 yards

Gauge

The gauge for this Round Free Crochet Coaster Pattern is 10 Rounds in sc is 4” Diameter. However, gauge isn’t crucial as long as your piece is laying flat. If you see cupping the the hook isn’t a good match, try going up a size.

Stitch Descriptions and Abbreviations

• Chain Stitch – ch
• Slip Stitch – Sl St
• Single Crochet – sc
• Half Double Crochet – hdc
• Skip – sk 
• BPsc – work a sc as you normally would but insert your hook from back to front to back around post of indicated st

Pattern Notes

• Sizes in Diameter – 5.75”, 7.25”, 9.25”
• * Designates a repeat.  
• Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
• Do not turn at the end of rounds.
• Sl st to first st of each round.
• “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch.
• “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches.
• “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st to create an increase.
