Canan Cabled Headband Free Crochet Pattern

I love crochet cables, but I am always afraid to take on a larger project that has them. I have tried a few and many times have become so frustrated that I just frog the whole thing! Well, frog no more! I have designed this project with learning cables in mind. This is a fast project that’s not large, so it creates the perfect opportunity to learn a cable!

Materials

4.50 mm Crochet Hook
Yarn Needle
Scissors
50 yds #4 Worsted
Red Heart Soft Yarn, Leaf

Gauge/Size

16 sts x 8 rows is 4”x4 in SC

2-1/2″ wide x 20″ long before seaming.

Stitch Descriptions and Abbreviations

• Chain Stitch – CH – yarn over, pull yarn through stitch on hook.
• Slip Stitch – Sl St – Insert hook into stitch or space, yarn over, pull yarn through both loops on hook.
• Single Crochet – SC – Insert hook into stitch or space, yarn over, pull up a loop, (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook.
• Foundation Single Crochet – FSC – Chain 2, yarn over, insert hook into 2^nd chain from hook, yarn over and pull up loop (2 loops on hook) Yarn over and pull through all loops, (1 foundation single crochet with chain at bottom) *Insert hook to bottom of the stitch you just made. It will look like the top or “V” of a stitch. Yarn over and pull up loop (2 loops on hook) Yarn over and pull through all loops.* *   * repeat.
• Double Crochet – DC – Yarn over, insert hook into stitch or space, pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through remaining loops.
• Front Post Double Crochet – FPDC – Yarn over, insert hook from front to back around the HDC of the previous row, not in the “V”, pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through remaining loops.

Headband

Row 1

FSC 14 sts.

Row 2

CH 1, turn, SC across. [14 sts.]

Row 3

CH 1, turn, SC in first stitch, then skip next 2 SC sts of previous row and place 1 FPDC in each of the next 2 SC sts of the previous row.

Working behind the 2 FPDC sts you just created, work 1 FPDC in the first skipped SC and 1 FPDC in the next skipped SC of the previous row.

*Skip the next 2 SC sts of the previous row in the stitch sequence and place 1 FPDC in each of the next 2 SC sts of the previous row.

Working in front of the 2 FPDC sts you just created, work 1 FPDC in the first skipped SC and 1 FPDC in the next skipped SC of the previous row. *

* * Repeat over next 4 SC sts of previous row.

SC in last stitch. [14 sts.]

Row 4

CH 1, turn, SC across. [14 sts.]

Row 5
CH 1, turn, SC in first stitch, then place 1 FPDC around each of the first 2 FPDC sts of the previous row.

Skip the next 2 FPDC sts of the previous row and place 1 FPDC around each of the next 2 FPDC sts of the previous row.

Working in front of the 2 FPDC sts you just created, work 1 FPDC in the first skipped FPDC and 1 FPDC in the next skipped FPDC of the previous row.

With right sides facing, fold your headband in half and Sl St together.
