How to Crochet a Shell Stitch?

A crochet shell stitch is an advanced beginner technique. The stitches themselves are simple, it’s the placement of the crochet stitches that you have to be mindful of. By adding chain sections to the shell stitch base you can create this wonderful crochet lace used on this Free Pattern for a Crochet Lace Tunic!

How to choose yarn for your Crochet Lace Tunic.

For warm weather projects I love to use cotton! It is light and soft and it is one of those materials that just gets better with time! I used Circulo Duna for my sample, which is a 100% DK Cotton. If you can’t get your hands on Circulo Yarn I would recommend substituting with Lion Brand Cotton Jeans, another wonderful DK Cotton!

Materials

• Size 3.50 mm crochet hook       
• Scissors                                            
• #3 DK Wt. Yarn
• Sample made using Circulo Duna
  #6001 (Color A) & #7650 (Color B)
• Color A – 650 (698, 744, 852, 898, 1006, 1054, 1162, 1208) Yards
• Color B – 340 (98, 454, 560, 620, 682, 806, 872, 940) Yards
• Solid Color – 990 (1096, 1198, 1412, 1518, 1688, 1860, 2034, 2148) total yard needed.

Gauge

• Ch 29 and follow pattern for Rows 1 to 9
• Pattern Swatch should measure 4.5” x 4”

• Skill Level: Intermediate
• * Designates a repeat.  
• “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch.
• “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches.
• “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st to create an increase.

Ease

2” positive ease in bust. Sleeves are meant to be slightly cropped so that they are 3/4 when cuffed. Add an extra set of shells for full length. Remember to account for extra yardage when adding length to sleeves or body panels.

Assembly

1. Steam block all pieces before assembling. (Optional but HIGHLY recommended)
2. Lay your Front Panel on your Back Panel with Right Sides facing.
3. Seam along Row 1 from the outermost corners in to create the shoulder seam to leave a 10” head opening or adjust to your liking.
4. Repeat Step 2 on other side, neck opening has now been created.
5. Fold each Arm in half with Right Sides facing.
6. Seam from Final Row to Row 1 along Row Ends to create Sleeves.
7. Place end of Sleeve Seam to properly locate armpit on Body Panels, reference chart for measurements.
8. Use a stitch marker to attach each Sleeve at the sides of the Body Panels (arm pit) and a second stitch marker at the half way point of Sleeve (shoulder).
9. Seam from arm pit around sleeve (Row 1) to Body Panels (Row Ends) back to armpit.
10. 10.Continue seam down Body Panels to desired location. Sample leaves last 12 Rows un-seamed for better hip fit.
11. 11. Steam Block a second time (or first) focusing on seams.
