Pattern Description and Crochet Tips
This pattern is designated as an Advanced Skill Level pattern because this special crochet technique is a huge undertaking.
You may have seen my Duality Blanket that uses this crochet technique and been intimidated by the size of it. While this is not the same interlocking crochet pattern, it is similar and a much smaller first project to tackle!
For this pattern I have only written it for one size, however I have included a section below explaining the multiple and how to make different scarf sizes.
When choosing your yarns for this project be sure to pick contrasting colors to really make this beautiful scarf pop!
For mine I chose to used two solid colors from the Wool-Ease Recycled line. I went with Cream and Black for a high contrast and elegant look!
Be sure to place stitch markers in the last stitch of the end of each row before switching to the next color so that your stitches do not get dropped.
We never work in the chain spaces in this pattern, we only in the double crochet stitches and the turning chain.
Interlocking crochet is one of a few wonderful crochet techniques that creates a reversible fabric if you do not like the mosaic option and do not want a single-sided design.

What is Interlocking Crochet
Interlocking Crochet is a technique that has many different names and is sometimes called mosaic crochet, double filet crochet, interweave or intermeshing. However you call it, one thing is for sure, it is gorgeous! This special crochet technique creates double-sided designs!
A technique that this may be confused with is overlay mosaic crochet where you to work in the back loops only, then drop down to pick up the front loop of stitches from previous rows to create textured stitches that lay over other stitches from previous rows. This technique works in only one direction so you have a lot of yarn cutting and ends to weave in.
However, Interlocking Crochet is a crochet technique where you create two layers of fabric (filet mesh) and work them together at the same time so that the rows are woven or interlocked with not yarn cutting! Yay for no end weaving, except where a new skein is added!
It is important to note that each row is actually two and the patterns are created by some stitches being worked in front and some in back but never mixing the stitches of your two separate colors. Noted as dcb (double crochet in back) and dcf (double crochet in front). These stitches are explained further below.
Also noted that double crochets are only worked in double crochets of the same color. Color A and Color B do not mix but work through each other.
I hope you enjoy this pattern and be sure to watch my YouTube Video Tutorial if you need some help, especially is this a new technique to you!

How to Adjust Sizing
There are two multiples for this interlocking crochet scarf pattern.
For Color A the Multiple is 8 plus 4. For Color B it is 2 stitches less than the foundation chain for Color A.
So if you notice the gauge swatch is 28 stitches (24 + 4) for Color A and 26 stitches (24 – 2) for color B.
Using that gauge swatch you can figure out more sizes even if you use larger or smaller yarn with a different hook.
Feel free to make a baby blanket, couch throw, something simple like a pot holder or hand towels just to get the hang of the different stitch patterns in this special crochet technique.
As far as yardage goes you will need pretty close to even amounts of each color. Always get a bit more than needed so you don’t have to worry about dye lots later.
Yarn Substitutes
This pattern uses worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors. Personally, I feel like Wool-Ease Recycles is a lighter worsted weight yarn. Some great subs for this project would be:
- Touch of Linen
- Color Theory
- Heatland
- Vanna’s Choice

- Double Crochet in Back – dcb – Work your double crochet as your normally would from the back. Sometimes this requires pulling the stitch through the corresponding window of the opposite color. To do this your will yarn over, bring your hook to the back, go through the window to pick up the dc needing to be worked on the front, insert your hook, pull the stitch through the window to the back, then complete your double crochet stitch as normal.
- Half Double Crochet in Back – hdcb – Work your half double crochet as your normally would from the back with the same process as the dcb instructions above.
Pattern Notes
- * Designates a repeat.
- “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch.
- “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches.
- “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next stitch to create an increase.
- Ch 4 counts as first dc and ch-1 sp throughout.
- When working rows you will only work your stitches in the color you are currently using (ex. Color A only creates stitches in the previous Color A Row) and work through, in front or in back of the color you are not using, never around the other color.
- Row Instructions give two sets of instructions noted as Row “1A” and Row “1B”. The A and B Reference the color you are working with, so each row is really two rows worked in succession.
- Before the start of each row it is noted if Color B needs to be at the Front of Back of your scarf, this is very important so you can start your B section of each row correctly.
