Pattern Description

I have classified this as an Intermediate Skill Level Pattern since this is a uniquely shaped crochet shawl.

This pattern is suitable for beginner crocheters who want a little bit of a challenge and who have knowledge of basic crochet stitches (double crochet and chain stitches) and are able to make granny clusters.

The Granny Cape is unique because it is not a triangle scarf or rectangle wrap like a traditional style granny shawl.

Instead, we are essentially creating a granny square with one wedge or triangle missing from it. This allows this granny stitch shawl pattern to hang comfortably around your shoulders without creating a long point in the back!

We will be changing colors at the end of each row if you choose to do two colors like me. However, feel free to make this not a crochet triangle shawl pattern in one color to avoid weaving in so many ends.

While I created this not a granny triangle shawl with two colors and stripes you are welcome to use a many or as few different colors as you would like!

Crochet Tips

Watch the helpful Full Step by Step YouTube Video Tutorial, written pattern and crochet stitch diagram to create the perfect project! In this video I will give you an in depth look at how I change colors and weave in my loose ends.

You will see up close the stitch placement to ensure you have a straight edge on the inverted triangle portion of this granny stripe cape.

Use the stitch diagram at the bottom of the post as well to help with stitch placement.

I prefer to use ch-2 spaces to create the corner space instead of ch-3 spaces in my corners. You may use either one as a matter of preference.

It is very important to work your last st in the 3rd chain of the tch-4 so ensure that you have a nice clean edge of the inverted triangle section of this granny stripe wrap.

For this pattern we will use a 1 row repeat so you can make this granny shawl as big or as small as you like.

Customizing this Free Granny Shawl Crochet Pattern

A great thing about center out shawls is that you can really make them in any yarn weight you would like. Just adjust your yarn and hook size accordingly.

For example, if you wanted to use a light weight yarn like dk weight yarn you might be able to use the recommended hook for this pattern or you may need to go down a hook size. However, you will probably need to add a few more row repeats to get to a size that is comfortable to wear.
