About this Free Crochet Blanket Pattern

I have designated this as an Intermediate Skill Level Pattern, however it is suitable for a range of crocheters. If you are comfortable with learning new stitches and working in the round than you can definitely crochet this modern granny square motif!

For this pattern you will need to know how to create a few easy crochet stitches like a Chain Stitch, Slip Stitch, Single Crochet, Half Double Crochet, Double Crochet Stitch, Stacked Single Crochet Stitch and Bobble Stitch. Most of these you are probably familiar with, however the Stacked Single Crochet may be new.

A Stacked Single Crochet (STsc) is created as a single crochet but then you will create another on top of it, or stacking. This creates a cleaner edge than a turning chain. Full instructions are included in the Stitch Descriptions and Abbreviations below.

For these squares you can make 7 per skein of yarn is you use the recommended yarn. (Lion Brand Color Theory a worsted-weight yarn) Each skein of yarn comes with 246 yards per skein and is 3.5 ounces. Find something comparable and you should still be able to get 7 motif squares per skein.

This free pattern is written to make 2 sizes but you can easily make different sizes by making more or less crochet squares!

The throw size is a perfect project to create for your living room but if you want a large blanket for your bed just make more squares!

This cozy corset blanket is perfect for special occasions like a baby shower or house warming.

How to Crochet with Two Different Colors?

Crocheting with two colors can sometimes be intimidating when you have to worry about color changes. Even with simple stitches a stripe pattern can be overwhelming and a color blocked blanket like the one is a great way to jump in to the world of multi color crochet projects!

If you are a crochet beginner and aren’t ready to try color changes in rows just yet then a simple design like this one where the squares are a solid color is the perfect compromise.

You can still use different shades of yarn in contrasting colors that will perfectly match your living space for an elegant look.

I designed this crochet afghan using two yarn colors for a classic look although the squares have a more modern look. By doing a classic checker pattern I think the two style balance each other out.

Make this a multi color blanket for a more unique look using many colors for a range of different color combinations instead of classic checkers.

Yarn Substitutes

For this croeht project these are some great substitutes of worsted-weight yarn that would be great options if you do not want to use the recommended yarn. The great thing about color crochet patterns made in pieces like blankets is that if you wanted you can make these squares in a completely different yarn weight like bulky yarn or even fingering! Just play round with hook sizes to get the right yarn and hook combo and then make enough for your crochet project.

How to Assemble your Afghan

Arrange your squares in a checkered pattern with Color A in each outside corner. You may seam together your square using any seaming method of choice.

Use the seaming Instructions below to seam yours like the sample.

Color A

  1. With wrong sides facing attach your yarn into the center single crochet of a corner and create a STsc, counts as a hdc. (Square A)
  2. On the opposite square in the corresponding center single crochet place a hdc. (Square B)
  3. Move to Square A – Skip next st, hdc in next st.
  4. Move to Square B – Skip next st, hdc in next st.
  5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until you reach the end and use each of the center single crochets, then add in the next two squares in your pattern beginning with the center single crochet stitches.
  6. Repeat Steps 3 to 5 until you reach the end of the squares in that row.
  7. Continue assembling the rows until all squares are joined.
  8. Once joined work down the rows perpendicular to your completed joins going right over the already created seams.
  9. Finish off and weave in all ends.

Trimming your Modern Granny Square Afghan

  1. With the right side facing, attach your yarn in any stitch and create a STsc, counts as a hdc, (ch 1, sk 1), hdc across on all sides placing 3 hdc in each corner aka center single crochet.
  2. Finish off and weave in your ends.
