Design Story and Inspiration

When Mary Maxim sent me their gorgeous Starlette Variegated yarn I fell in love but I had one problem…I am not a fan of color pooling. Believe I know it’s gorgeous and it’s a fun technique but I don’t have the patience for it. Because of that I really didn’t know what to do. I love the softness off this yarn and I wanted to make a quick project so I decided to triple up this yarn to make a cozy chunky crochet infinity scarf!

Now, I like sublet color pooling, I don’t like big pocket of color. So what I did for this crochet cowl pattern was make sure I started each skein from a different color!

Materials

9.0mm Crochet Hook
(Clover and Furls are my favorites!)
Yarn Needle
Scissors
#4 Worsted Weight Yarn – (3) Skeins, 180 yards EACH
I used Mary Maxim’s Variegated Starlette in Wedgewood.

Gauge

9sts x 7 rows in SC/BLO is 4″ x 4″

Stitch Descriptions and Abbreviations

Chain Stitch – CH – yarn over, pull yarn through stitch on hook.

Slip Stitch – Sl St – Insert hook into stitch or space, yarn over, pull yarn through both loops on hook.

Single Crochet – SC – Insert hook into stitch or space, yarn over, pull up a loop, (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook.

BLO – Create the intended stitch in the Back Loop Only of the stitch to be worked.

*   * – Designates a repeat.

Cowl

Using your 3 strands of worsted together, begin with Row 1
IF you are using VARIEGATED yarn, start with a different color on each strand.

Row 1

Chain 21

SC in the second chain from the hook and every chain across.

20 total stitches.

Row 2

CH 1 then turn.

SC in BOTH loops of the first Stitch

SC in BLO of stitches #2-19

SC in BOTH loops of the last stitch, #20

20 total stitches.

Row 3-70

Repeat Row 2.

Do not finish off!

Your Kai Cowl should be about 9” wide and 38” long before assembly.

Cowl Assembly

Lay your cowl flat and then grab one top corner and flip it down creating a diagonal fold in the middle of your cowl.

Fold your cowl in half and bring the top corner you have folded down to the opposite bottom corner. and Sl St the two edges together.

Flip your cowl around so that the seam is on the inside of the cowl.
