Crochet Herringbone Single Crochet Stitch & YouTube Tutorial
Learn the Herringbone Crochet Stitch with this Photo Tutorial and Written Instructions alongside the helpful Step-by-Step Video Tutorial! In this blog post you will learn how to create a reverse stitch that is essential to making the herringbone patten. This pattern only needs basic crochet skills.
This beautiful stitch is made using 2 repeat rows and has a right side and a wrong side. For this step-by-step photo tutorial I am using a worsted weight yarn, Lion Brand Wool Ease Roving Origins and a 6.00 mm crochet hook.
After the tutorial a Free Pattern is included for a Hat and Scarf set using this unique crochet stitch!
NOTE: Each Row will begin with a regular single crochet or reverse single crochet. However, if you continue on to make the hat in the second part of this blog post you will have one side that uses slip stitches to create the brim. The regular single crochet will be in the row before the herringbone stitches start, have fun using this tutorial today and Happy Crocheting!
Step by Step Photo Tutorial
Chain any number of stitches, the Herringbone single crochet stitch is a one stitch repeat, I used a foundation chain of 13 to create a 12 stitch swatch.
Full stitch descriptions are included below after the tutorial if more clarity is needed.
Row 1 – Create a regular single crochet in the second chain from the hook using the back bump (see first photo for single crochet placement) . *Place your hook under the second (or last) vertical bar of your last stitch (the first single crochet, see photo 2, silver darning needle), insert your hook into the next stitch (Gold darning needle in photo 2, see photo 3 for on your hook), yarn over, pull up a loop, 3 loops on your hook, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops (see completed stitch in photo 4). This creates your first crochet herringbone stitch! Repeat from * to end to complete your row (see photo 5 for further stitch placement and 6), turn and move on to Row 2. Reference photos below.
Row 2 – Chain 1 (I do not chain 1 since I have a very loose tension, the turning chain 1 does not count as a stitch, you may or may not use it) reverse single crochet (rsc) in the first stitch by working from back to front with your yarn on the side of your work facing you (wrong side of your work, photos 8, 9, 10 and 11), reverse herringbone single crochet (rhsc) picking up the last bar of the last stitch (see photo 12 and silver darning needle for placement) and the next stitch working from back to front to the end of the row (photos 12, 13, 14 and 15), turn and move onto Row 3.
The photos below (16 and 17) show in better detail which bar and stitch you are picking up on the right side of the swatch. Photo 18 shows a completed row, the swatch is flipped so that Row 1 is on the top, remember we worked from the back of the swatch.
Row 3 – Chain 1 (I do not chain 1 since I have a very loose tension, the turning chain 1 does not count as a stitch, you may or may not use it), we are now working a regular single crochet and herringbone single crochet stitches so out working yarn is to the back of the work.
Start by placing a single crochet in the first stitch (photo 19), then place a herringbone single crochet (hoc) in every remaining stitch (photos 20, 21, 22, and 23), remember you have to always pick up the last bar of your last stitch and the next stitch, then turn and repeat Rows 2 and 3!
Photo 24 shows another completed row with right side facing, photo 25 shows the wrong side with Row 1 at the top.
