How do you Crochet a Simple Chevron Stitch?
A simple crochet chevron stitch is made by making a series of zigzag ripples, or up and down peeks using increases and decreases to create points. Once you have the first row completed a crochet chevron pattern is easy to follow.
However, for this pattern we are making just ONE big chevron making this the easiest of any chevron crochet patterns!
Why this is a Perfect Beginner Chevron Pattern
This Bulky Granny Stitch Blanket is ONE big chevron! That is what makes this pattern so simple and gives it an instant classic look! Plus, Bulky Yarn and a larger crochet hook make seeing your stitches easy!
In the beginning of my crochet journey I avoided chevron blankets (sometimes I still do) because the zigzag can look complicated and in my mind required advanced skills or complex math. Spoiler, it doesn’t!
Creating a chevron is just a bunch of counting to make a simple set up row. Once you know where to increase, where to decrease, and how to keep your edges straight, you can make a chevron blanket in any size, any color, and any yarn weight you want with some simple math.
However, this free crochet pattern is made with only ONE chevron and isn’t actually a classic chevron, it’s really half of a granny square!
This pattern uses basic stitches, mostly double crochet stitches and works up fast with bulky weight yarn. Soon you will have one giant classic chevron for a modern look without any stress. Whether you’re making a baby blanket, lap blanket or a king size spread, the pattern is the same!
How to Switch Yarn Colors
My favorite way to switch colors is in the middle of the last stitch before the color change. For this pattern we are changing colors at the end of rows.
So, when you reach the. last stitch at the end of a color stripe, before completing that double crochet, pull through with your new color on the last yarn over.
Then, cut the color you are done with, leaving about a 6 inch tail and then continue working the next row with the new color.
Also, I like to weave my ends in as I go to avoid having a ton at the end of a project.
How to Make ANY Size Crochet Blanket
For this crochet granny stitch blanket, making any size is super simple!
Here’s how:
- All you have to do is just keep repeating Row 4 to make your blanket larger/wider or do less Row 4 repeats to make it smaller. No fussing with adjusting a starting chain!
- Row 4 will dictate the width of your blanket. Once you have your blanket the measurement you want, then you will continue to the Row 20 Pattern Repeat Instructions in the “Granny Chevron Blanket – Maintaining Width”. Since you have changed your width the stitch count will be different but the instructions are the same.
- Now, make note that the point of the blanket is the final length of the blanket. So as you are working down your sides when you see that the point is where you would like the final size (desired length) of your blanket then move onto the “Granny Chevron Blanket – Decreasing” Instructions.

- Size 8.00 mm crochet hook
Color A – 4 skeins of Hue + Me in Night Forest [617-175N] - Color B – 4 skeins of Hue + Me in Whisper [617-121P]
- Color C – 2 skeins of Hue + Me in Love Song [617-140U]
- #4 Worsted Weight Yarn
Color A – 548 yds
Color B – 548 yds
Color C – 274 yds
Gauge
- First 6 Rows will measure 12 across the longest side of the triangle by 6.25 from the MR to the ch-3 loop in inches.
- If following this pattern using the suggested yarn, know that I used every last bit of Color A so be very mindful of tension, go gauge is super important for yardage.
- Blocking can significantly open up this stitch depending on yarn used.
- If you want to adjust the size, make the triangle to you desired size, then continue with the pattern.

- One Size: 40 by 60 inches
Stitch Descriptions and Abbreviations
- Chain Stitch – ch
- Stitch(es) – st(s)
- Skip – sk
- Single Crochet – sc
- HalfDouble Crochet – hdc
- Double Crochet – dc
- 3 Double Crochet – 3dc – work 3 dc in designated st or sp as a 3dc cluster.
- Magic Ring – MR – Wrap your yarn around your left pointer and middle finger starting from your palm side around and then cross the yarn over the top of your fingers to create an “X”, bring your hook under the yarn from the top of your fingers, yarn over and pull up a loop to begin your stitch.
- Stacked Single Crochet as dc – STsc/dc – insert your hook into the designated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops, *insert your hook into the second vertical bar on the stitch you just created, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull though all loops, repeat from * one more time.
Pattern Notes
- * Designates a repeat.
- “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch.
- “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches.
- “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next stitch to create an increase.
- Color A – Rows 1 to 6, 16 to 21, 31 to 36, 46 to 51, 61 to 66, 71 to 78.
- Color B – Rows 7 to 12, 22 to 27, 37 to 42, 52 to 57, 67 to 70.
- Color C – Rows 13 to 15, 28 to 30, 43 to 45, 58 to 60.
Easy Chevron Crochet Pattern using the Granny Stitch
Granny Chevron Blanket – Increasing
Row 1 – MR, STsc/dc in MR, 2 dc in MR, (ch 3, 3 dc) in MR, pull MR tight. [2 dc clusters]
Row 2 – Turn, STsc/dc in first dc, dc 2 in last worked st, (3dc, ch 3, 3dc) in ch-3 loop, 3 dc in STsc/dc (last stitch of previous row). [4 dc clusters]
Row 3 – Turn, STsc/dc in first dc, dc 2 in last worked st, 3dc bet next (2) 3-dc clusters, (3dc, ch 3, 3dc) in ch-3 loop, 3 dc bet next (2) 3-dc clusters, 3 dc in STsc/dc (last stitch of previous row). [6 dc clusters]
Row 4 – Turn, STsc/dc in first dc, dc 2 in last worked st, *3 dc bet next (2) 3-dc clusters, repeat from * to ch-3 loop, then (3dc, ch 3, 3dc) in ch-3 loop, then **3 dc bet next (2) 3-dc clusters, and repeat from ** to end, then 3 dc in STsc/dc (last stitch of previous row). [8 dc clusters]
Row 5 to 19 – Repeat Row 4. Each Row will increase by 2 clusters to a final count of [38 dc clusters]
Granny Chevron Blanket – Maintaining Width
Note: Row 20 will maintain the same number of clusters as the previous row since you will not be creating a cluster at the beginning or end of the row. The STsc/dc at the beginning and end of the row acts as a decrease however the (3dc, ch 3, 3dc) in the ch-3 loop acts as an increase to maintain the same stitch count.
Row 20 (Decrease Row to Create Straight Edge) – Turn, STsc/dc in first dc, *3 dc bet next (2) 3-dc clusters, repeat from * to ch-3 loop, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 loop, then **3 dc bet next (2) 3-dc clusters, and repeat from ** to end, STsc/dc (last stitch of previous row).
Row 21 to 58 – Repeat Row 20. [38 dc clusters]
Granny Chevron Blanket – Decreasing
Note: Row 59 will decrease like Row 20, however, we will stop at the ch-3 loop (noted as end) so now the stitch count will decrease.
Note: For the First Corner you will continue from Row 58, for the Second Corner you will need to reattach your yarn using the Instructions Below.
Row 59 (Decrease Row to Create Corners) – Turn, STsc/dc in first dc, 3dc bet next (2) 3-dc clusters to end (ch-3 loop), dc in ch-3 loop. [18 dc clusters]
Rows 60 to 77 (Decrease Row to Create Corners) – Turn, STsc/dc in first dc, *3dc bet next (2) 3-dc clusters, repeat from * to end, STsc/dc (last stitch of previous row). Each Row will decrease by 1 cluster to a final count of [1 dc cluster]
Row 78 (Decrease Row to Create Corners) – Turn, STsc/dc in first dc, dc in last dc, finish off.
Next: Reattach your yarn in the ch-3 loop of Row 58 to continue working in in the same direction of the complimentary row.
Next: Follow Rows 59 to 78 instructions above omitting the first “Turn” of Row 59.
Then: Finish off and weave in all of your ends.
This chevron pattern is fun, mindless, and can be done by an absolute beginner. Once you’ve finished one blanket, I’m sure you’ll be making another, maybe by request! Anyone who sees it is surly going to ask for one!
