Pattern Notes

  • Designates a repeat.
  • You will cut your yarn for each color change and weave in your ends if you choose to do multiple colors.
  • I do not chain 1 at the start of the row, you may chain 1 if you like.
  • When following this version of the Caramel Stitch there is not right or wrong side as each time you work a Caramel Stitch Row the “Right Side” of the stitch will be worked opposite of the “Right Side” from the last Caramel Stitch Row.
  • When you look at the stitch worked in this fashion the Caramel Stitches will slant in opposite directions as if in a herringbone.
  • If you do not want the Caramel Stitches to slant in opposite directions you will need an ODD number of single crochet rows between caramel stitch rows not and EVEN number of single crochet rows like in this pattern.
  • You may choose to color changes as I did (see my Caramel Stitch Blanket for the full effect) or do a Solid Color as the texture of this stitch is still strong enough to stand out.
  • This pattern is worked in the multiple of 2 + 1 so you can only work over an odd number. You will always start and end with a single crochet stitch on Caramel Stitch rows.
  • I abbreviate “Caramel Stitch” as Cst, I do not know if there is a formal stitch abbreviation, I created this to make pattern writing easier.

Photo Instructions

Below is the first row of the Caramel Stitch so you can see the “Right Side” and the “Wrong Side”. For this tutorial the Right Side and Wrong Side of this stitch switch making this a reversible stitch. When done with an even number of single crochet rows between the Caramel or Cone Stitch Rows the stitch will slant in opposite detections. If you want your Caramel Stitches to go in the same direction you will need to add an extra row of single crochet.
