Pattern Description

The perfect bum bag for summer is here. This will be your go-to oversized summer tote to take on all of your amazing beach trips, long walks and casual dinners out!

Although I have noted this as an intermediate skill level pattern it is definitely doable for a determined beginner crocheter!

Use stitch markers to mark the first stitch in the rounds on the modern granny squares so that you have the correct number of stitches on that side.

This bag crochet pattern uses a 4.50 mm crochet hook, be sure to check your gauge. If your gauge is off then your squares may pinch or be wavy making it difficult to seam the squares together.

This granny square bag is just the right size to fit all of you essentials and then some! Eighteen and a half inches wide and 9 and a half inches deep at the shallowest point, this crochet boho bag is the perfect size to wrap comfortably around your side.

The strap for this crocheted bag is designed to be just long enough to keep the bag in a comfortable position on your body. You may adjust the shoulder strap to be longer or shorter to fit your preference.

Get creative with you color choices. Even though I designed this pattern to use three colors this easy crochet pattern would look lovely in just a solid color too! Let your personal style shine!

Modern Granny Squares

Assembly

  1. Lay your squares like the photo labeled  “Assembly Diagram” below and begin seaming them together using a flat zipper seam with Color C.
  2. A flat zipper seam is created by picking up the back loop of corresponding stitch on the squares next to each other, drawing up your yarn and creating a slip stitch.
  3. Once all of your squares are seamed together, fold your bag panel in half at the horizontal line in the photo below. This will create the base or bottom of the bag.
  4. Then fold the 2 squares on the two vertical lines in half to become part of the back.
  5. Continue with your flat zipper seams to complete the back of your bag.
  6. Once your squares are all seamed together, using Color C, reattach your yarn in any sc space in the opening of the bag.
  7. With right sides facing, sc evenly around placing sc3tog where 3 squares meet and 3 sc in the tallest point of the bag opening (where straps will be placed).
  8. Once you have worked around all sides, sl st to your first sc, ch-1 and work 1 sc in each st, place 3 sc in the center st of previous 3-sc and sc3tog where 3 squares meet again.
