I had no idea what I was making was called a bunting, but you learn something new every day! I have always loved the holidays, but I have never been one for decorations. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the decorations and lights, but pre-babies it just wasn’t something that I got excited to do every year. Last year though, that started to change! Jack was 2 last Christmas and I had noticed he was super interested in all the holiday hoopla, the lights, the decorations, the music, all of it! So this year I have really wanted to get a bit more into the holiday spirit and what a better way to do that than to decorate! Every year I want to start collecting a few more special decorations and make a new handmade one! This year I made this super cute “Christmas Joy” Bunting! I am so excited to be bringing this Free Crochet Bunting Pattern to the Life and Yarn Blog!
Please keep in mind that this Free Crochet Bunting Pattern is more of a recipe than a full blown pattern. I want you to be able to recreate what I did, but also be able to modify it to your liking…for example, say you don’t want yours to say “Joy” you want yours to say “Thankful”. You would have to make additional triangles and different letters. My intention is to explain what I did but also have this as a guide for you to get creative! So let us get making!

Materials
Yarn : #4 Wt Worsted.
Hook: 3.75mm / F
(Clover and Furls are my favorites!)
Gauge
17sts x 18 rows is 4”x4” in sc.
Note : gauge is not super important! Use any hook you are comfortable with! Change up the yarn if you would like too!

Triangles
Row 1 – 1 Fsc.
Row 2 – Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in Fsc.
Row 3 – Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next. (3 total sts)
Row 4 – Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, sc to end. (4 total sts)
Row 5 – Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, sc to end. (5 total sts)
Rows 6 – 30 or desired rows
Repeat Row 5, each row will increase by 1 st.
On final row :
Place 3 sc in the same space as the last stitch to turn and work down the side of your triangle.
Sc evenly down the side placing one sc in the side of each row.
Place 4 sc in the bottom of the Fsc to turn and work up the other side of your triangle.
Sc evenly back up the other side placing 1 sc in the side of each row.
Place 3 sc in the side of the last row and sl st to the next sc.
Finish off.
Attaching triangles
Row 1
Fsc 155 or desired length, begin next Fsc but also pick up a corner stitch on 1 triangle, complete the stitch, sc across to end of side, create an extended Fsc, make 4 Fsc and repeat to attach remaining triangles, create an extended Fsc after attaching the last triangle and Fsc 154 or desired amount of stitches.
Row 2 – Ch 1, turn, sc to end
Row 3 – Ch 1, turn sc to end.
NOTE – if you think your space between the triangles is puckering you can sc2tog in that area to hide the pucker.
Trim
With a contrasting color, attach to the bottom edge of your bunting and sc to your first triangle. You can choose to do a continuous sc all the way around or do a shell border like mine on the triangles. The stitch repeat for the shells is as follows : sc, skip 1 st, *5 hdc in next st, skip 1 st, sc in next, skip 1 st, repeat from * around your triangles.
When you finish your last triangle, sc to the end of your bunting.
Letters
To make the letters, I made 1 row of Fsc long enough for each letter and left a long enough tail to sew on your letter. I tried to cross stitch my letter but it looked sloppy. Get creative with how you do yours! Maybe try felt or fabric or beads!
Now that you’re all done check for any ends to weave in and then go find the perfect spot for your bunting!
